Cold Season, Go Away!

The temperatures have dropped, and so has our immune systems! Stay healthy this winter with some easy tips to follow. Small adjustments to your daily routine can keep the cold season away from you completely!  As many already know, diet, sleep routine, and home environment play important roles in maintaining a healthy life. These three things are extremely important during the winter months in Wisconsin!

With Holidays and treats of all sorts, we forget to make sure we are getting some key foods into our diet during the winter. It’s definitely okay to have your apartment stocked with cookies, but also make sure you have some soup in your pantry too. Warm liquids like soups, teas, and ciders are great for this time of year and they will keep the cold away! Make soup and cozy up in your living room when it’s chilly out. Most nutritionists recommend 5 servings per day of fruits and vegetables.   Try to select fruits and vegetables that have antioxidant properties, and to further boost your immune system try to reduce your intake of refined white sugars.

The Days get shorter, and the night gets longer. Having a proper sleep routine is key to optimum health. Make sure your apartment is a proper temperature for sleeping so you can have a full restful sleep.  Some people accomplish this by using setback thermostats, allowing their apartment to cool off at night while staying warm under blankets.  Also eliminate stimuli from technology and lights by turning them off. Even if you are asleep, your body still can sense lights or TV’s left on in your bedroom.  A healthy sleep routine will make you feel more rested and ready for the winter season!

The environment where you spend a lot of time is also a key component to your health. Your apartment is a great place to get a head start on your health this winter! Don’t forget to wash your hands and disinfect items in your home. Germs linger around, so don’t get sick, disinfect!  Keep germs out of your apartment as much as possible.  Winter in Wisconsin means snow, and with that comes salt and slush. Always take your shoes and outer wear off at your front door, so you aren’t tracking in the salt and slush.  This will also keep your floors cleaner.  Stop dirt and germs at the door, and you will not have to worry about anything spreading further into your apartment.  Most importantly, with winter approaching, have a happy and healthy holiday season!
